Telugu Wedding Day Customs

Weddings are the union of two individual's life. The bride and the groom chant religious hymns to confirm their relationship for the lifetime. Besides that, marriages in India are the beautiful presentation of Indian culture and traditions. There are so many rituals and customs performed in the wedding and each of these has religious significance for the wedding couple. Telugu weddings are among the most popular events happened in the country. They are belonging to great concoction of celebrations and traditions for the attended people.

Mangala Snaanam

During the Telugu wedding custom of Mangala Snaanam, both the bride and the groom need to take an auspicious bath on the wedding day, at their respective homes. The basic principle to conduct this custom is to purify the couple and prepared them to perform sanctified rituals at the D-Day.

Ganesh and Gowri Puja

Before starting the wedding ceremony, the groom is presented at the Ganesh pooja, which is held at the mandapam.

Kanyadaan

Kanyadaan is one of those ceremonies, which have historical significance. In this custom, the father of the bride gives all her responsibilities to the groom. While performing this custom, the bride sits in a bamboo basket and her maternal uncle takes her to the mandapam. During the Kanyadaan ceremony, the bride and the groom are not allowed to look at each other because they are separated by a curtain. Once the ceremony completes, the bride's father wash the groom's feet and assume him as an 'avatar' of the Almighty.

Jeelakarra Bellamu & Madhuparkam

During the Jeelakarra Bellamu ritual, the couple has to apply a paste made from cumin seeds and jaggery on each other's hands. It is conducted to confirm the relationship between the couple for the lifetime. Soon after, the couple performs Madhuparkam ceremony, the bride wear white cotton sari with red border and the groom wears white dhoti with red border.

Tying of the Mangalsutra

After the Jeelakarra Bellamu and Madhuparkam ceremony, the curtain between the couple is removed and subsequently the mangalsutra custom is performed. In this ceremony, the groom ties the mangalsutra, made up of golden disc, around the bride's neck. According to the Telugu traditions, the groom ties three knots of mangalsutra to the bride.

Kanya Daan Akshata

In this ceremony, the wedding couple exchanges garlands to each other. As they exchange garlands, all the guests in the event bless the couple by throwing flowers and rice coated with turmeric powder.

Saptapadi

During the Saptapadi custom, the groom and the bride walk seven steps or pheras together around the sacred fire, while chanting religious mantras. When they walk around, the pallu of bride's sari is tied to one end of the groom's dhoti.

Sthaalipaakam

The last wedding day custom in Telugu wedding is known as Sthaalipaakam. It is the custom in which the groom decorates the bride's feet with silver toe rings. After all the rituals are completed, the couple seeks blessings of elder members of their respective family and then the bride is taken towards her new home.
