Jain Wedding Day Customs

According to the Jain culture, the marriage is a crucial merger between the two individuals and thus it should be conducted in calm and simple environment. Due to this feature, marriage rituals and traditions are also isolated from expensive activities. But that doesn't mean that it's not incorporated any grand event. The Jain tradition indicates that the Jain marriage can have luxurious settings but without any wastage of time and money. Therefore, the wedding day customs in Jain traditions are also based on these values.

Kanyavaran

The first ceremony is conducted on the wedding day is Kanyavaran or Kanyapradaan. During the ceremony, the parents of the bride put some rupees and rice on her hand, which she gives to the groom. The groom takes it from her hand and accepts the bride as his better half. Thereafter, the priest pours water on the couple's hands and speaks religious mantras.

Granthi Bandhan

Next ceremony is Granthi Bandhan in which a married female member ties the groom's handkerchief or shawl with one end of the sari of the bride. The priest recites mantras to seek blessings of the God for the couple.

Phere

The ceremony of Phere or saat phere is conducted after Granthi Bandhan ceremony. This ritual is conducted at the mandap in which the bride is seated on the right of the groom. While taking rounds of sacred fire, they take seven vows and exchange positions to sit. The Phere ceremony is one of the most important and traditional rituals conducted in weddings in India.

Mangal Geet

After completing all these aforementioned wedding-day customs, the family members, particularly the female ones, gather to sing mangal geet and charm the environment. During the ceremony, the groom and the bride exchange garlands to each other and the priest chants religious hymns.
