Oriya Wedding Day Customs

All the rituals before the wedding are over and now it is the time of big event. After going through the pre-wedding rituals, the bride and the groom is well prepared to tying the knot with each other at the grand occasion. The wedding is the day where the couple starts a new chapter in their life and vow to each other that you are now my beloved. The process of being married is carried by many rituals and customs. In Orissa, the propitious occasion of marriage has many sacred practices to perform by the bride and the groom. In reality, Oriya wedding day customs have many features, as mentioned below.

Kanyadaan & Saptapadi Custom

On the special day of wedding, both the bride and the groom are taken towards the mandap. At there, the sacred ritual of Kanyadaan is being performed. During this custom, the bride's father puts her hand onto the hand of the groom and gives all the responsibilities of his daughter to him.

Haatha Ghanti Custom

After the Kanyadaan and Saptapadi custom, Haatha Ghanti ceremony is performed in which the bride and the groom takes seven rounds of sacred fire by chanting religious hymns and shlokas under the guidance of a priest. Once all the wedding day ceremonies completed, the bride is taken over to the home of the groom where the newly married couple is going to practice post-wedding rituals.
