Jain Pre Wedding Customs

Marriage is the institution of new relationships and new responsibilities. The oath of accepting these new duties in life is performed through various rituals and traditions at the wedding event. In Indian weddings, several customs are practiced within the shed of exotic and vibrant activities. However, there are some Indian weddings, which are conducted in much smooth manner. Jain wedding is certainly one of them and tying the knot in such wedding is the pleasure in itself. Here are the pre-wedding rituals that are practiced in Jain marriage tradition.

Laghana Lekhan

Laghana Lekhan is the first pre-wedding ritual conducted in Jain wedding. This ritual is held in the bride's home in which the priest hold a pooja and bring out muhurat i.e. the right time and date of wedding ceremony. The proposal of such dates is later sent to the soon-to-be-groom's home.

Lagna Patrika Vachan

After performing Lagna Patrika Vachan, the Lagna Patrika Vachan ceremony is carried out in the boy's home. The priest reads out the entire letter and the groom attends Vinayakyantra pooja.

Sagai

During the Sagai ceremony, the bride's brother applies tilak on the forehead of the groom and presents him attractive gifts like gold chain, sweets, clothes, a ring, coconut and cash. After that, the elder members of the family offer blessings to the groom.

Mada Mandap

Next pre-wedding ceremony is Mada Mandap. It is conducted at the homes of both the bride and the groom couple of days prior to the marriage. All the rituals are conducted under the guidance of priest.

Barati and Aarti

The ritual of Barati is held when the groom along with the procession arrives at the bride's home. At the entrance, the female members of her family perform 'Aarti' in respect of the groom.
